OBD-II scanner

The OBD-II scanner app built for dealer appraisals

Appraise turns a Bluetooth OBD-II reader and your phone into a dealer scanner: stored, pending and permanent codes in plain English, readiness monitors, and red flags when codes were cleared shortly before the appraisal. It runs on iPhone, Android and in Chrome or Edge on a laptop, prices repairs from book hours at your labour rate, and the first 25 dealerships, anywhere in Canada, get a free Bluetooth OBD reader with their 14-day trial.

Key facts

  • Cleared-code flagsUnder 200 km, 10 warm-ups or 300 minutes since a clear, adjustable per dealership.
  • Every code typeStored (Mode 03), pending (Mode 07) and permanent (Mode 0A).
  • BLE readersiPhones need Bluetooth Low Energy; classic-Bluetooth readers won’t connect.
  • 1996 and newerAny vehicle with the 16-pin OBD-II port. EV and hybrid support is partial.
  • Never cappedScanning isn’t limited on any plan.
  • Free readerFree Bluetooth OBD reader with your 14-day trial for the first 25 dealerships, one per dealership.
Fraud flags

How does it flag codes that were cleared before the appraisal?

Clearing codes turns the light off, but it resets counters a scan can read. Appraise reads them all and puts the verdict at the top.

  • Red: codes cleared recently, readiness monitors not ready, a permanent code with no stored codes, engine computer VIN different from the car
  • Orange: pending codes, a long distance driven with the light on, low battery voltage
  • The odometer reading at the last clear, worked out from distance since the clear

Background: how to tell if codes were recently cleared.

What it reads

What does a scan read?

Generic OBD-II, read the way an appraiser needs it. Only the readings the vehicle supports are requested, so scans stay quick.

ReadingWhat it tells you
Monitor status 01 01Check-engine light, number of codes, and which self-tests are complete
Stored codes 03Confirmed faults, in plain English
Pending codes 07Faults detected but not yet confirmed
Permanent codes 0AFaults a scan tool can’t erase; with zero stored codes, a recent clear
Freeze frame 02Engine conditions when a code set
Since codes cleared 31 30 4EKm, warm-ups and minutes since the last clear
With the light on 21 4DHow far and how long a fault was ignored
Engine computer VIN 09 02A mismatch with the car suggests a swapped computer
Odometer A6On newer vehicles, to compare with the dash
Battery voltageFlagged under 12.2 V engine off or 13.2 V running
Live snapshotRPM, coolant temperature, fuel trims and more
Repair estimates

How are repair costs estimated?

Every code comes with a likely repair and a cost range, in your dollars.

  • Book labour hours × your own labour rate, plus parts
  • Codes that need diagnosis first (transmission, hybrid, network) show “get it diagnosed” and a potential cost that counts only if you include it
  • The total flows into recon and the max buy automatically

Generic OBD-II reads engine and emissions systems, not airbag, ABS or body modules.

Readers and devices

Which readers and devices work?

One account on every device. Value and Inspect work without a reader; Scan needs one.

Bluetooth Low Energy readers

Use a BLE OBD-II reader. iPhones can’t connect to classic-Bluetooth readers, so check the box says BLE or Low Energy.

What to look for in a reader

iPhone and Android

Scan from the phone in your pocket. The app remembers your reader and registers it to your dealership.

Laptops in Chrome or Edge

The web app scans over Web Bluetooth in Chrome or Edge. Safari doesn’t support it.

Free reader for founding dealers

Free Bluetooth OBD reader with your 14-day trial for the first 25 dealerships, anywhere in Canada. One BLE reader per dealership.

Never capped

Scan every car on the lot. Scanning isn’t limited on any plan.

Read-only by design

Appraise only reads. The one exception is a clear you deliberately confirm after a repair.

Honest limits

What can’t a generic OBD-II scan do?

Knowing the limits keeps the scan in its place: a fast, reliable first look, not the whole story.

  • Powertrain only. Generic OBD-II covers engine and emissions systems. ABS, airbag, body and tire-pressure modules need manufacturer-level tools.
  • 1996 and newer. Older vehicles don’t have the standard port.
  • Partial EV and hybrid support. Battery health on most EVs needs manufacturer data.
  • Not an inspection. A clean scan doesn’t mean a clean car. Pair it with a walk-around, the photo inspection and a test drive.

Do I need a reader to use Appraise?

No. Value works with a VIN and km, and Inspect works with photos. A reader adds the engine scan and the cleared-code flags.

Will Appraise ever clear codes?

Only if you ask it to and confirm. Every other request it sends is read-only, so a scan never erases the evidence you are looking for.

Which vehicles can it scan?

Any 1996 or newer vehicle with an OBD-II port. Light- and medium-duty diesels report their own monitors, such as the particulate filter and NOx systems.

How is this different from a basic code reader?

A code reader shows codes. Appraise reads the readiness monitors, since-clear counters, permanent codes and engine computer VIN together and tells you what they mean, then prices the repairs.

Does it work on a laptop?

Yes, in Chrome or Edge, which support Web Bluetooth. Safari doesn’t.
