Vancouver and the Lower Mainland

Used-car appraisal app for Vancouver and Lower Mainland dealerships

Appraise for Dealers gives Lower Mainland appraisers a max buy from a VIN, using retail comps from Canadian dealer listings near their rooftop, wholesale grades from Extra clean to Rough, and an OBD scan that flags codes cleared before the trade-in. It is built for the coast: more rain than salt, a high share of hybrids and EVs, Fraser Valley flood risk, and trucks that came down from the Interior with a winter of brine on them.

Key facts

  • Rain over saltMost Lower Mainland cars see little road salt, so a clean underbody is common and worth confirming.
  • EVs and hybridsA bigger share of trade-ins than in most of Canada. Hybrids report engine codes; EV battery health needs manufacturer data.
  • Flood checksSilt, corroded seat tracks and fogged lamps are the tells, a real risk since the 2021 Fraser Valley floods.
  • Local comps firstBC listings within your search range, then Alberta only if fewer than three cars match.
  • Cleared-code flagsRed flag at under 200 km, 10 warm-ups or 5 hours since codes were cleared.
  • 14-day free trialNo card needed. Free Bluetooth OBD reader with your 14-day trial for the first 25 dealerships.
Local conditions

What should Lower Mainland appraisers watch for?

Coastal cars age from moisture more than salt, and the Lower Mainland has a few risks of its own.

Wet, not salty

Months of rain find tired door and windshield seals, blocked cowl and sunroof drains, and wet carpets. Lift the mats, check the headliner for stains, smell the cabin and look for standing water in the spare-tire well.

Fraser Valley floods

The November 2021 atmospheric river flooded Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford, and Merritt and Princeton in the Interior. Check for silt in seat tracks and under carpets, corroded connectors and a water line in the trunk, and read the history for an insurance write-off.

Interior and Sea-to-Sky trucks

Trucks and SUVs from Whistler, the Okanagan and the Coquihalla corridor bring salt, brine and mountain-grade brake wear. Appraise them like a prairie truck.

Road-salt checklist

EVs and plug-in hybrids

Ask for charging and warranty history, inspect the charge port and cable, and scan hybrids for engine codes. Generic OBD-II can’t read EV battery health, so get manufacturer data before you lean on an EV’s value.

Japanese-market imports

Right-hand-drive imports are common on the coast. Some don’t answer a generic OBD-II scan, parts can be slow and the buyer pool is narrower, so check the import paperwork and price for it.

Bridge and Highway 1 traffic

Crawling across the bridges and along the Highway 1 corridor wears brakes and transmissions faster than the km suggest. Test-drive in traffic and read pending codes as well as stored ones.

Value

How are Lower Mainland trade-ins priced?

Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and the Interior are different markets, so Appraise prices from listings near your rooftop, not a provincial average.

  • Same trim and similar km in British Columbia within your rooftop’s search range: 300 km by default, or 160 km, 500 km or the whole province; even 160 km covers Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley to Hope and the Sea-to-Sky to Squamish
  • Alberta listings come in only when fewer than three comparable cars match in BC
  • Recently sold listings count ahead of asking prices when there are at least three
  • Best price: what to list at to be the cheapest comparable car in your search range, and the cheapest comparable car province by province

Values are estimates from comparable listings, each with its comp count and a confidence label.

Scan

How does the scan help on coastal trade-ins?

BC ended AirCare emissions testing in 2014, so no registration step looks at readiness monitors. A two-minute plug-in scan does.

  • Distance, warm-ups and minutes since codes were cleared, with a red flag on a recent clear
  • Engine codes and readiness monitors on hybrids, the same as on gas cars
  • Permanent codes that a scan tool can’t erase
  • Engine computer VIN against the car’s VIN, and 12-volt battery voltage

Generic OBD-II reads engine and emissions systems, not airbag, ABS, body modules or EV battery health.

Frequently asked questions

Something else? Email [email protected] or book a demo.

Is the free OBD reader available in Vancouver?

Yes. Free Bluetooth OBD reader with your 14-day trial for the first 25 dealerships, anywhere in Canada, the Lower Mainland included. One reader per dealership, while spots last; book a demo to claim yours.

Does the scan work on hybrids and EVs?

Hybrids, yes: they report engine codes and readiness monitors like any gas car. EVs have no engine codes, and battery health on most EVs needs manufacturer data that generic OBD-II doesn’t provide.

Will Alberta listings skew a Vancouver value?

Only if BC is short of matches. Alberta listings come in only when fewer than three comparable cars match in BC, and each comp shows its city, province and distance so you can judge it.

Can it catch a flood car?

It helps. The photo inspection flags corrosion, stains and damage for you to review, and the scan reads stored and pending engine codes. A history report and a careful look under the carpets are still the final word.
